Holiday Bliss at the Animal Shelter
By Joanne McDowell
I am not so sure that what happens over
the holidays is bliss for the 160 dogs
and cats who reside at the local shelter,
many are overlooked for the cutest kitten
or adorable puppy. The dogs and
cats that have resided for the longest
time will continue to reside as they just
aren’t “good enough” to get adopted at
Christmas time, or most likely any time.
Often people say to me, “I would like to
get involved but I cannot go out there, I
would feel too badly and probably want
to take all of the animals home...” Truth
be told, that is not fair to the cats who sit
patiently in the rooms waiting for a lap to
lounge upon, or the dogs who wag their
tails wanting to walk after being kept in a
kennel all day.
Going to the shelter is not about “you”,
it is about the pets that have been abused
and neglected and found their way to a
place with three squares and a warm bed.
It is not about “your feelings”, it is about
caring for God’s little creatures.
I believe we only have this shelter because
of the selfishness and irresponsibility of
man, it has nothing to do with the animals
being at fault. How sad is that?
This Christmas season visit your local
shelter, walk a dog or pet the cats, make a
donation, and if possible, consider adoption,
it will make your life and the life of
your new friend so much merrier.
Happy Holidays from the Humane Society
of Sandusky County!
